Jim Bonfiglio graduated from the University of Rochester in 1975 with a double major in Political Science and History. He attended Loyola University School of Law where he graduated in 1979 with a Juris Doctor degree. He was admitted to the Florida Bar shortly afterwards in December 1979. Mr. Bonfiglio first began practicing insurance defense, then had a general practice narrowing the scope to Plaintiff insurance issues and foreclosure defense. Later, he focused his practice in the area of mortgage foreclosure defense. He has concentrated exclusively in representing wronged consumers who are facing the loss of their homes to their mortgage lenders since the late 1980s.
Jim has since committed his professional life to protecting wronged consumers by using various consumer protection statutes to try and save their homes from foreclosure. He has volunteered countless hours to this cause. He was honored by the Palm Beach County Legal Aid society as the 2008 recipient of the Pro Bono Consumer Law award and one of the initial inductees in the Palm Beach County Legal Aid Pro Bono Hall of Fame after providing more than 500 hours of pro bono services to indigent clients. Jim was also nominated for the 2008 Florida Bar Foundation Medal of Honor Award.
Jim was a guest lecturer at Nova University Law School, and assisted in presenting continuing legal education courses to private attorneys and legal aid services in Florida through the HOPE program, the Miami Dade Consumer Services Department, the District 1 Foreclosure Prevention Clinic and monthly free advice to consumers for Wellington for several months from May, 2009. He has presented lectures to dozens of Continuing Legal Education classes both pro bono and on a fee basis.
Jim is a member of the Palm Beach County Bar Association, the Florida Bar, and the Southern District Court of Florida. As a member of the Palm Beach County Bar, he served one year as the vice chair and one year as the chairman of the then Consumer Law Committee. Jim is the former president and vice president of the Palm Beach County Italian American Lawyer’s Association. He was a member of the Palm Beach County Foreclosure Committee, and the Summer Mediation Pilot Program Subcommittee.
Jim has lived in the community of Ocean Ridge, Fl since 1988, where he currently resides with his 3 rescue Shar Pei dogs. He was appointed to the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission in April 2000, elected as the vice-chairman for 7 years and then elected chairman in 2008, where he continued to serve in that capacity until March 2014 upon his election to the Ocean Ridge Town Commission for a 3 year term. He was reelected to a 2nd 3 year term in March 2017. He served one year as vice mayor and currently serves as the mayor.
